Only
books purchased by the Olin Library will go into the New Book Area in the
Learning Commons.Gift books will
not normally be included.
When
new books are cataloged, cataloging will give them a status ofNew Book Area.
New
books will be sent on a separate book truck to Circulation.
Circulation
staff will stamp the date of arrival on the date due slips, then scan the
books to be sure everything is accurate.
During
scanning, when the system prompts circulation staff to change the status
or leave it as New Book Area, staff will retain the New Book Area status
assigned by cataloging.
The
books will then be shelved in the new book area in call number order.Larger books that do not fit in the
shelves may be placed on top of the book cases with book ends to support
them.
Because
the volume of new books coming through varies considerably during the
year, there will be no defined schedule for moving them to the circulating
collection.Rather, when more room
is needed for newly cataloged books, circulation staff will remove books
from the New Book Area to make room. They will check the dates of arrival in order to remove the books
that have been in the area longest.
Where
books are found lying around unshelved on the first floor, they will be
taken to circulation and scanned. If the scan reveals that the book is in the New Book Area, it will
be returned to that area.
If a
patron checks out a book from the New Book Area, it will be sent to the
circulating collections upon its return.
