Basics

Please don't change the color of the box headers

  1. Create New Guide
  2. Column Size: adjustable
  3. Add content
  4. Repeat for additional tabs as desired
  5. Publish Guide

    IMPORTANT NOTE

There are a couple times in LibGuides when you have to WAIT just a moment. One is when you're bringing up an Edit Window for a Content Box. At first it looks like it's ready to be used, but then a few seconds later the window changes and has a toolbar full of buttons across the top. THAT'S when you can start typing or pasting in the Edit Window.

Also, when you change to a different tab/page, you have to wait until everything on the page is loaded before you click to Edit or Add something. That's because web browsers load page content before scripts, so when you click to add/edit something before everything has loaded into your browser, the browser will try to run the proper script, but will get confused because it hasn't loaded the script yet. The result will be a grayed screen (like normal) but with no Edit box popping up. If this happens, just refresh the page (Refresh/Reload button in your browser or hit the F5 key on your keyboard). That will take care of it and allow you to try again.

    Getting Started

The first step in creating a new Guide is actually conception. You need to decide what information you want to provide and how you want to organize it. Will it be just one page? Will you need multiple tabs?

From the Admin Sign In page you can click on Create New Guide to get started. You may want to watch this brief video first.

    • When you first Create the New Guide, you can either start fresh or choose an existing Guide (there is a Course Guide Template) to use as a template. That will copy the style and data from that Guide into your new one, which you can then customize. You can change the name for your Guide, for each page/tab, and for each box whenever you like.

    • EXAMPLE

    • Start fresh (no template)  help
Use one of my guides as a template  help [use one of your own]
Use another user's guide as a template help [this is where the Course Template is found]
Use a guide from another institution as a template help [need permission]

    • Be sure to associate your guide with the Course Guides group. You can give your guide a "friendly" url and associate with a subject area by clicking on Status (yellow command bar). Under Status click Change Guide Status. You can add a friendly url, associate with a subject and eventually you can publish your guide.

    • To switch between 2- and 3-columns, put your mouse over Add/Edit Pages at the top of the page and select "Toggle/Resize Columns." Side column boxes will be placed at the top if you change from 3 to 2 columns

    • Content is added in boxes. You can add a box in the main section or in columns. Add content by clicking "Add new Box". Select the type of content you want to put in the box and give it a title. Then you can "edit text" to put your content in. Make sure you choose the appropriate box type (see the Enhancing tab for more info on boxes) for the content you are adding.  The "add text" link will just add text at the top of the box, which is useful for descriptions if you need them. PLEASE don't change the COLOR of the box headers; we are trying to keep a uniform look to the guides.

    • The students will get to this guide by going to the Drury Guide Homepage and searching by Group, Subject or Author.

    • Students can also sign up for email alerts to your Course Guides. See the red Email Alert link by the Share button at the top. You can then send an email alert to everyone.
