Learning Commons
Thanks to the generosity of the Gleason family and the SGA, F. W. Olin Library created a Learning Commons (LC) on the main floor of the library that went live in January, 2009. The LC provides clusters of multipurpose computers, printers and scanners, living room spaces, study tables for group work, and wireless connectivity. Integrated into it are the print reference collection, current periodicals, and a new book area, all available for browsing.
The reference desk is located adjacent to the LC and staffed by students and librarians 11:00AM – 9:00PM Monday thru Thursday and 11:00AM to 6:00PM on Friday. We are there to assist students with every aspect of their research needs and to help them with technology applications. The aim is to create a flexible space where students are able to work in a fully supported, collaborative, multitasking environment with access to a broad range of print, video and electronic resources.
The core of the learning commons is a unique “ribbon” designed by two Drury 5th year architecture students, Chris Mrozewski and Jared Nelson, and modified by architecture professor Marshall Arne. The ribbon, which had to be specially constructed, provides space for fifteen computers, a scanner, several task chairs for collaborative work around the computers, data and power connections for laptop use, lounge chairs, and cushions that can be used flexibly.
