The Fresco
Author: Sheri S. Tepper
Part thriller, part social SF, prolific novelist Sheri S. Tepper’s latest follows the adventures of Benita Alvarez-Shipton, an empty nester in her late-30s, whose life is changed when two aliens ask her to carry their greetings to Washington, D.C. Chosen as intermediary because she is both ordinary and beyond political reproach, Benita seizes the opportunity to leave her abusive, alcoholic husband and start a new life in D.C. However, she doesn’t count on her role extending beyond the initial delivery of the alien greetings, or on the dangers it will attract to her and her children.
This is one of my favorite books – why? I guess it is because it takes on the worlds woes and fixes them. It is like getting to wave a magic wand and having all our problems solved. I’ve been reading Sci Fi since I was a kid and Tepper never fails to delight my imagination …. Victoria Johnson, Sys Admin Olin Library

Not that this trilogy needs any introduction, but I am re-reading Tolkien’s Ring trilogy. And, when I have a few moments to practice, a beginner’s manual for blues guitar that I picked up at Springfield Music.

I just finished reading Angels and Demons by Dan Brown…a page turning thriller about conspiracy, the Vatican, science and the existence of God and antimatter-which may or may not be the same.
The choice of the book was related to the Online Education May faculty meeting which will be using “Angels no Demons” as theme. The theme was chosen because Drury’s new Learning Management System will be Angel and the movie, Angels and Demons, will be released the week following thie meeting. The meeting, by the way, will also be celebrating Online Education’s 10th anniversary–10 years of online classes at Drury!
What was uniquely different about reading this book was that it wasn’t a book at all…but a downloaded version using the Kindle application on my iTouch. It’s amazing, fast, and just as engaging as turning the pages of a book. Besides, it’s portable, easy to read, and thoroughly as enjoyable as a physical book…IMHO. Think about the many places one can read inconspicuously!
Within minutes of finishing Angels and Demons, Amazon delivered the next Dan Brown novel to my iTouch..The Da Vinci code…so I’m off to “cuddle up” with this next book in Dan Brown’s adventures…on my iTouch!
Enjoy these thrillers…and rediscover the joy or reading again. I know I did! It’s so wonderful to get lost in a novel and let imaginations run.
On a more technical side, I’m also reading Switching to the Mac by David Pogue….this PC person isn’t looking back again.
